Visiting card size in India: inches, millimetres and pixels

The standard visiting card size in India is 3.5 × 2 inches (89 × 51 mm). Here are all the common sizes, the pixel sizes for 300 DPI and how to set up bleed.

If you are designing a visiting card, the first question is the size. Get it wrong and the printer has to stretch, crop or shrink your design. Here is everything you need, in the units designers and printers actually use.

The standard visiting card size

The most common visiting card size in India is 3.5 × 2 inches, which is 88.9 × 50.8 mm (usually rounded to 89 × 51 mm). It fits every card holder and wallet. Many Indian printers, including us, also print a slightly taller 3.5 × 2.25 inch card (88.9 × 57.15 mm), which gives a little more room for an address and several phone numbers.

Add bleed before you send the file

Cards are printed on a big sheet and then cut. The cutter can move by a millimetre or so, so colours and photos that touch the edge must run past it. This extra area is called bleed. We ask for 3 mm on every side, so a 3.5 × 2 inch card file should be 94.9 × 56.8 mm (1121 × 671 pixels at 300 DPI).

Colour runs into the bleed, the card is cut at the trim, and text stays inside the safe area.

Keep names, phone numbers and logos at least 5 mm inside the edge (the safe area). Our online visiting card studio shows the bleed, the cut line and the safe area for you, so you do not have to calculate anything.

Which paper should a visiting card use?

  • 300 GSM art card is the everyday choice: firm, smooth and sharp for colour.
  • 350 GSM feels thicker and more premium.
  • Textured or pearl card suits lawyers, jewellers and boutiques.
  • Matt or gloss lamination protects the card and changes how it feels; matt looks more modern, gloss makes colours pop.

Rounded corners

Rounded corners are cut after printing. They make a card feel softer and stop the corners from getting dog-eared. If you choose rounded-corner cards, keep text away from the corners, because a few millimetres disappear at each corner.

  • Big, bold names. Oversized type, often the name across the whole card, with very little else on the front.
  • Minimal with a purpose. One accent colour and lots of white space, so the name and phone number are read first.
  • Dark stocks and gold. Black or navy cards with gold lines; they look best with matt lamination.
  • Warm earth tones and hand-made shapes for boutiques, bakeries, salons and makers.
  • QR codes as part of the design, leading to your website, menu, map or reviews.
  • Bilingual cards with your name in Hindi and English for shops and family businesses.

Our visiting card designs follow these: a big-name card, black and gold, terracotta, a doctor's card, a CA card, a property adviser's card with a QR code, a saffron shop card in Hindi and English, and an indigo corporate card, each with a matching back.
